Delta Gamma

Chapter History

Delta Gamma Fraternity was founded in 1873, at the Lewis School for Girls in Oxford, Mississippi. Three young girls, Anna Boyd Ellington, Eva Webb Dodd, and Mary Comfort Leonard, founded Delta Gamma when they were unable to go home for Christmas that winter. Inspired by the local Fraternities in the area, and looking for a means to support one another, they supported Delta Gamma as a club of “mutual helpfulness,” with a desire to “do good,” the motto we live by today.

Our chapter of Eta Nu was founded in 2005 by Samantha Eng. She was originally part of a non-greek organization, that often found themselves excluded from events on Hofstra’s campus, as well as receiving very little funding from the school. She began to research different Greek organizations, to which she heard back from Delta Gamma nationals. Through the spring of 2005, the initial club worked themselves into Delta Gamma, through new member education and formal spring recruitment. At the end of the 2005 spring semester, 21 members were initiated into Delta Gamma Eta Nu Chapter.

Through the story of Mary, Anna, and Eva, and Samantha’s hard work and determination to make Delta Gamma a part of Hofstra’s Greek life, we have all learned that anything is possible, and we will continue to use our determination to do good.
